The FSR usually organises the Barbara celebration around Saint Barbara's name day on 4th of December. She is considered the patron saint of miners and is therefore celebrated appropriately by our institute. Traditionally, the institute gets together and spends a relaxed evening with something to eat and drink. This is also where the initiation ceremony for new students takes place.

The student council, or FS for short, is the entire student body of the Geosciences programme. This means that if you are studying for a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geosciences at RUB, you are automatically part of the student council.

The Student Council, or FSR for short, consists of the elected members of the General Assembly of the Geosciences Student Council. The FSR is responsible for the administration and use of the Student Council's financial resources. For example, the FSR organises barbecues, parties, orientation trips and orientation week to help students network with each other and strengthen cohesion within the Student Council. The exchange and transfer of knowledge among students is also an essential part of the FSR's work.

In addition, the FSR acts as a link between the student council and the institute's teaching staff. As the first point of contact, we take care of students' concerns and are in lively exchange with the institute's teaching staff. For example, we sit on various committees of the institute and the faculty, such as the examination board, the study commission or the faculty council, where we exercise the students' voting rights. There, as representatives of the student council, we try to represent their rights and points of view.

The Student Council Representatives Conference, or FSVK for short, acts as a link between the many student councils at RUB and other student bodies such as AStA and StuPa. Each student council has one vote in the FSVK. Issues affecting all student councils are discussed there, and their voices are represented.

The Geoparty occurs irregularly, hosted by the Geography and Geosciences Student Councils. Usually at the end of the summer semester, both student councils celebrate together as part of a joint faculty at a club in Bochum. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the student councils at a low price, allowing everyone to have fun and dance the night away together.

Geogrillen (= barbecues from us) are organised by the FSR. Several take place each year, mostly in the summer. The FSR provides food and drinks and invites all students to spend a relaxed evening eating, drinking, chatting and playing games. The costs are covered by the FSR, so admission is free for all students.

The Student Council General Assembly, or VV for short, is the highest body of the Student Council. The VV takes place once per semester at the beginning of the semester and is convened by the FSR. The meeting is open to the public and all students of the FS Geosciences are explicitly invited. Every student of the Student Council is entitled to vote there.

All kinds of things are decided at the VV. On the one hand, the budget is approved and a new FSR is elected. After that, various positions within the FSR are newly elected, both internally and in the various committees. The date of a new VV is announced by the FSR via the usual channels, such as Moodle, Discord or Instagram.
